The majority of those sailed to the United States in the hope of escaping a land filled with poverty and British oppression. Furthermore, mass evictions, the near-famines of 1861-1864 and 1879-82, unremitting poverty, a change in subsistence farming, assisted emigration and oblivion of sin sent home by relatives to help otherwise family members to emigrate all played their part in the continued emigration of the Irish population. The aim of this paper will be to prise the reasons and forces behind Irish emigration between the years 1845 to 1920. For this to be evaluated an analysis of the topics aforementioned will be discussed.
